You are doing just beautiful work...(here it comes)...but those grate type steps are going to be a horror to keep clean.
Dirt from feet or shoe will cling in the holes. And what doesn't cling will drop onto step below to be ground in or cling into those holes.
And of course keeping the holes varnished is a drag. On the positive side we already know how much you love to varnish....just look at those bulwarks. :D
